Description
This course was set up and taught by myself
in the first semester of 2000-2001 and 2001-2002
to 1st year students in a Biochesmetry degree. It provides a basic
background on Kinematics and Dynamics, followed
by a simple survey on Thermodynamics. Finally, it
concludes with an enthusiastic description of how and
why Electricity and Magnetism is important to
Biochemestry, Biophysics and Medicine in general.
Biochemestry students do not approach in a happy manner a physics course, so although I do not expect them at the end of semester to change for a physics degree, I put all my efforts in order for them to get a (nice!) taste of physics and understand most (if not all!) of it.
In order to alert students to undesirable learning attitudes, I please ask them to have a look at the 2000-2001 data regarding sucess or faillure in General Physics I (Fisica Geral I). And give it a thought or two...
Have you ever asked why is Physics SO important and crucial for current and future researh in Biochesmetry (Bioquimica)? Have a look at this recent paper-article: Page 1 & Page 2 & Page 3 & Page 4 & Page 5 and conclude that you DO NEED some knowledge in physics. Otherwise,...

Students Feedback on the Course
Finally, I ask the students to fill in THESE questionaires
(Inquerito1) Query1 and
(Inquerito3) Query3
at the start of the
semester and THIS questionaire
(Inquerito2) Query2 at the end.
I stress that these are THE questionaires that interest me the most.
I am further grateful in advance for any
constructive criticism that may assist me and the
teaching of General Physics 1 to be both more effective in the
(very!) near future.
